Everglades National Park

This past weekend I went out to the Everglades National Park. Turned out to be a very hot day!

If you are going to visit the Everglades I would recommend visiting during the winter. Two reasons to go during the winter months, the heat and the bugs! I do not think I have seen deer flies so big. At one point I thought they were moving my car!

I did have a great trip and was able to capture a few interesting images that I have posted.

The black and white images was post processed using NIK Silver Effects 2 software. I am enjoying using it however, I still have a lot to learn.

Las Vegas - CATS Meeting 2011

I was in Las Vegas last weekend to attend the College Athletic Trainers Society Meeting. The Administration of the organization had asked me if I would take the photos for the meeting. Sounded like a good idea to me as I had not been to the meeting or had I been to Vegas in over 20 years. The meeting was great and Vegas was great as well.

Lynette and I walked around everywhere after the meeting on Saturday afternoon and evening. Some of the places that we went are shown below.

UM Women's NCAA Tennis Vs Texas

Today the Women's tennis team defeated the University of Texas to move on into the "Sweet 16" of the NCAA Championship. It was the last home match for Senior Bianca Eichorn, who will be missed by all.

The team will be heading out to the remainder of the tournament that is hosted by Stanford University.

Happy Mothers Day

Today we left the house at 5:45am and headed to Miami Beach to have Mother's Day breakfast with David and Maria. We were talking last night and I suggested that we go as it is a nice way to start the day with sunrise over the beach.

We had a great time visiting and the breakfast was wonderful as well. I would recommend the News Cafe for breakfast to everyone.

My wish for you is to remember your mother on this special day as without their sacrifice's we would not be here today.

Miami Vs FSU 5-1-2011

I had a busy weekend, especially on Sunday as the Baseball team had game three with FSU.

The last game of the series was to be starting at 1:00.

After about the third inning I went over to our annual SAAC field day with the other athletes. I hope to post some images of the fun.

HDR Images for Dental Office

This weekend I was asked to photograph a dental office that was going up for sale. As I was moving thru the office I thought that if I used HDR images I would be able to capture the office as dynamic as it was when we were there. The office was a fabulous place with lots of well thought out detail.

This was my first attempt at HDR for architecture and feel that I could have done it better if I was able to send more time. However, I had a lot of fun and have learned from my experience.

Miami Skyline

This past weekend I went over to Key Biscane to take photos of the Miami Skyline just prior to sunrise. I have wanted to do this for sometime as I thought the lights would look good on the water in the bay.

Additionally, it was a full moon and I wanted to try to have the moon over Miami. However, the vantage point I was at would not put it over the city buildings. Instead it was going down over the Rickenbacker Causeway.

UM Men's Tennis - Basketball

Sunday was a big athletic day on the campus of the University of Miami. Baseball started at 12:00, Men's Tennis started at 3:00 and the Men's Basketball game started at 3:30.

I did not get a chance to go to the Baseball game today but went to the home opener Friday night. However, I stopped by the Men's Tennis match against FAU and then walked over for the start of the Men's Basketball against Clemson.

Here are a couple of photos from each event.

The lens that I used was a Pentax 77mm 1.9 Limited Lens. ISO 800 f 4.0 at 250 shutter for basketball as it was a little dark.

The lens that I used for tennis was the same Pentax 77mm 1.9 Limited Lens. ISO 100 f 4.5 at 1000 shutter. I took a few photos after the I finished the basketball game and had to use 800 ISO as it was getting dark outside.

Florida Keys

Loren and Callie were down for the past three weeks and the last weekend we drove down to Key West. We were able to stay three nights in Marathon and had a great time.

I have posted a few images from around the Condo and Pigeon Key.

The weather was wonderful as the water was calm and inviting! The rest of the country was having snow storms, so we were enjoying a weekend in the Florida Keys to get away from it all!

Green Farm Truck

Visit to the Orchid Growers in the Redlands

Scott, Lynette, Loren and Callie all drove down to the Redlands just outside of Homestead Florida this weekend to visit the Orchid Growers and the Winery.

I have posted a few of the photos from the trip.

I took this photo of the pink water Lilly to the lab this weekend and had it enlarged to 24 x 36. Everyone was so wanting a copy of this as it was coming out of the Epson 7880 printer. You need to see it to believe it! I believe it would look good hanging on your wall at home! Contact me if you would like to order a print.

Matheson Hammock

I set the alarm for 5:10am this morning to take photos at Matheson Hammock here in Miami. Just a beautiful morning, however a bit chilly for me. I was dressed warm, so it was not bad.

Sunrise was special! I wanted to include part of the lifeguard stand to create a bit of a silhouette effect.

The Great Blue Heron was the model for the day. He just posed for quite some time and then flew away.

I tried a Pano image, but was not happy with the outcome. Still a work in progress for me.

Beaux's Art Festival University of Miami

We had great weather this weekend to visit the Beaux's Art Festival on the campus of University of Miami. They had listed over 250 artists in attendance.

Who can resist Carolina BBQ.........

The Parrots sitting on the tree are from a group of 8-10 that fly over and on campus all day long. They are flying over our practice field all the time. Some of the crowd at the festival were saying.......who do they belong to?

The Farm Syracuse Kansas

Wedding Bells this Summer

Planning for Dru and Abby's Wedding...........................

This summer I will be attending two weddings of my sister's children. Dru will be on June 5th and Abby on July 24th. We will be traveling from Miami to attend and do some photography. I am looking forward to having a great time with the family and recording these wonderful family events. History for you, I was lucky enough to photography my sisters wedding in the early 80's. Things have changed as we are now digital and film is something to just think about. I remember taking over 300 images for my sister and worried that if I did not get the image I was dead. Not only dead, but she would not speak to me for the remainder of my days on this earth. Well.........I am still here and must have done ok! With that being said, I am not doing the weddings, but will do the extra stuff and will enjoy doing it as I have wanted to do weddings for 30 years.

I am reading and reviewing all the sites and trying to catch up on the learning curve. I have found so many talented wedding photogs out there these days. The market is tough and makes me happy I still have a day job.

Chrystal Decanter

I was taking some flash photos the other day of items in the house and I thought about lighting up the crystal decanter. The question is how many ways can it be done? The images below are all with two electronic flash units. One flash from under the decanter and from the front.

I really like the way the decanter glows with the flash from under the glass.

I tried the black and white and thought it look special as well.

The glow was very almost too much, but was interesting.

Still Life Studio Shots

Last weekend I was working on my my best Strobist action. I set up my Vivitar 283's and took some pictures of Cheeries, Glass and Chickens. Today I am posting some photos of the Cheeries that I thought turned out ok.

I do not have wireless triggers at this time, but would like to acquire them. I used optical photo slaves to set off the flashes.

I will post an image of the glass decanter later as I thought it turned out special as well.

California Dreaming - La Jolla

We enjoy going to San Diego, California and the coastal towns to the north. A special place to visit if you have the chance is just about 15 miles North on I-5 is La Jolla. The view's are always spectacular and the sunset is a treat as well.

And the Lord said, "Let there be Light" Genesis 1:3. Without light a photograph would not be the same. I am constantly looking for the right light to make "the photo" one to remember.

Sunset on the Pacific Coast is special ! This is a shot from the La Jolla Cove area as the sun is setting on what was a wonderful day for Lynette and I.

This family of seagulls was fun to watch. Mom would fly off and come back with dinner for the little ones, making sure everyone got something to eat.

Seagulls are protective of their young, and before six months of age or so. I was surprised that the next was this close to the cliff we were overlooking. They continue to nest as their parents bring back food, regurgitated for the little ones. After reaching juvenile age, you'll see these young gulls flying with their adult counterparts. They look similar but are slightly smaller, with a more mottled coloring.

California Wine Country

If you have a chance to go to the Temecula Valley in southern California to the wine country, do it. The link to the Temecula wine country is here.

We stayed at South Coast Winery in Temecula CA, this year and had a blast. The wine region is about 45 minutes north and east of San Diego. The region has been growing over the years as there are well over 20 wineries that are working.

South Coast Winery was recognized as the "Best Winery in California" for the second consecutive year when they were presented with the distinguished Golden Bear Award on July 9, 2009.

The winery combines wine production with a luxurious sanctuary for all, adding a excitement to an ever growing wine country. The intimate resort offers Southern California residents a very drivable getaway. It is an easy destination to get to from the San Diego, Los Angeles areas.

The tranquil walks through the vines in the morning was refreshing. We arrived from Miami the previous day and it was a treat to not have to deal with the humidity of South Florida. I was able to put on a sweater and enjoy the vineyard view from the villa that we were staying in.

Wine tasting that afternoon was fun as the staff were attentive and knowledgeable about their very good tasting wines.

Dinner for two that evening was romantic that included a number of entrees choices that were complemented by wine from the South Coast Winery.

Another winery that we enjoy visiting and belong to the wine club is Cougar Winery in Temecula that is located on the "De Portola Wine Trail". The link to their winery is here.

They are a small winery that produces some very nice wines. Cougar Vineyard & Winery is specializing in 100% estate grown and produced Italian varietals including... Vermentino, Sangiovese, Aglianico, Montepulciano, Primitivo, Malvasia Bianca, Arneis and Pinot Grigio.

My wife loves the 2006 Pink Cougar which won a gold medal at the Orange County Wine Society Commercial Wine Competition June 16th.

Vizcaya - Miami Florida

This winter my brother and his family were in Miami on vacation. We visited Vizcaya and I took this image. I was looking over the images today and thought I would put a frame around it. I think it turned out ok, and I might make a greeting card out of it.

Lynette and I spent the past weekend in Stuart Florida visiting with friends. We were able to stay on in a condo on the beach and had a blast.

I have attached a photo below of a storm that blew in one afternoon. I just had to turn it into Black and White as I thought it made it look wild.

Reviewing Photos from the Past

I have been reviewing some photos from our recent travels to California this June.

This is an image from the San Diego County Fair that was going on in Del Mar. The race track and fairgrounds are a stones throw from the beach and Pacific Ocean.

Lynette and I had a great time trying to find the perfect spot to make the photo. This image was taken with about a 4 second exposure.

I kept hearing some forceful blowing sound outside of my room and went outside to find the hot air balloon going over our villa in the vineyards. What a site to see at 6:30 am in the morning. How much fun would that be ?

This image of the balloons was taken in the wine country in Temecula California, just east and north of San Diego.

I will post additionally photos in the days to come.

Lunch in the Keys with the Mariani's

Today Lynette and I went to the Keys for Lunch with

Dick and Marlene Mariani. We ate at the World Wide Sportsman in Islamorada.

On the way back we stopped at the Moorings resort to check on property for some of our friends that might be staying in the Keys during the winter.

The property was unbelievable. The house was amazing, the view was incredible. We felt like we had traveled to an island and were on a private oasis.

Lunch in the Florida Keys

Islamorada in the Keys is about an hour and fifteen minutes from the house. This has always been a wonderful place to drive to have lunch or dinner. You feel like you have traveled to an island and have not a care in the world.

The view just makes you want to get in the boat and go for a ride.

The staff is feeding the tarpon fish that are about tree feet long. Additionally, there were three sharks with the group as it was lunch time.

We drove on over to Holiday Isle to look around. During spring break this place is just nuts. Today is was very quiet and peaceful.

Bill Baggs State Park - LightHouse

We visited Bill Baggs State Park to see the Lighthouse. The park is located at the very end of Key Biscayne. The view was well worth the walk to the top.

Robert is Here - Fruit Stand

This weekend we went to Robert is Here - Fruit Stand. The place was packed with people all standing in line for the fresh fruit milkshakes.

The fruit and vegetables are unbelievable. The colors were so bright and eye catching. Everything you can think of and then some that you have never heard of. I am not sure how you would use some of the different fruits?

Yes, we stood in line for a milkshake as well. Strawberry and Pineapple were the two flavors that we choose. Talk about good, the berry's were exceptional ! Even though they were out of season, it was very tastee !

How about those Mangoes ? This weekend was the International Mango Festival in Miami. Such a sweet fruit !

The Redlands - Schnebly's Winery has changed in the past year !

Megan and Brandon inside looking at the different wines that are offered. This is the first time that we were able to go into the new tasting room as the old one was just a trailer house. The winery has done a wonderful job of putting a destination together.

Big Cypress Preserve

Saturday we drove to the Big Cypress Preserve in the northern part of the Everglades. I think it was only about 45 miles west of Miami on highway 41, or Alligator Alley as the locals call it. The first stop was at the Oasis Visitor Center. We arrive around 9:30 in the morning. The schedule showed that it opened at 9:00. The parking lot was packed. We had to park on the grass in the back of the lot. There were a number of Boy Scouts that were straping on their backbacks and getting ready to go for some distance, most likely for the weekend.

We had two thing s that we wanted to see on this trip, Big Cypress Preserve and Clyde Butcher's Photo Gallery.

When we departed the Visitor Center we drove about 7 miles to the Kirby Storter walking path. This took us out into the Swamp about 1 mile round trip. We walked on a board walk above the water for the entire trip.

I would recommend the walk as it was well worth the effort. We were able to see some of the Big Cypress trees that were growing out of the water. This was something that I have been wanting to Photograph for a number of years. I just have not been able to make the trip out to the preserve.

Having seen Clyde Butchers Photographic work some years earlier makes you want to get out and see what he is recording. This area is breath taking. Dad and I discussed that Clyde has the advantage of living in this area year round. He is able to know the seasons, when things are blooming and when it alive with color.

I recorded so many images from the weekend, I am sure a number of them will make the website.

After seeing Clyde Butchers work, dad was inspired to start photography all over again. He was a hobby photographer back in his younger days. He tells stories of using the darkroom and developing his own film. I thought that I would post a Black and White Image of the swamp. I am sure I will spend a number of nights working in Photoshop trying to make some of the images into pieces of art.

I gave dad my other camera and had him take pictures of anything that he wanted. He was taking a number of good shots, a couple of which are on this post.

I would recommend to everyone that is in the South Florida area during the winter months to drive out to the Big Cypress Preserve. The preserve was established in 1974 and expanded in 1988 to a total of 729,000 acres. The winter months is the dry season which gives you less bugs. We had a wonderful day of about 83 degrees. The shade of the trees made it very peaceful and a comfortable walk.

Miami Heat Game

We were able to secure Miami Heat Tickets a couple of weeks ago. Dad and I were setting on the floor at about the free throw line across from the bench.

Great seats !

Schnebly Redland's Winery

The first stop for us as we drove out of the Everglades National Park was the Schneby Winery. Lynette and I had been there with her folks a little over a year ago and the place has totally changed. The grounds, buildings, Cheekee huts, Waterfalls, have all been added.

The Cheekee hut is very impressive in that the size is just overwhelming. The construction is amazing. However, I just would hate to see this go if a Hurricane might hit.

Under the walkway was a lagoon that had been cut out of the limestone. Large blocks were removed from the ground to create the waterfalls. The size of the stones were impressive as well. The grounds were taking shape to become a very tropical paradise.

The winery is the Southermost Winery in the United States. They make Tropical Fruit wines from fruit that is locally grown. Mango, Jack Fruit, Star fruit, etc., you get the idea.

Just checking out the waterfall as well. I can see that there will be weddings, receptions and I am sure corporate events taking place at the winery.

This structure will hold five or six hundred people easy.

Dad just outside of the tasting room. We did not go in for tasting on this trip. Lynette and I have been in before, but Dad's health will not allow it, so, we did not tempt it.

RF Orchids in the Redlands

We pulled into the parking lot at RF Orchids and we had arrived just as the tour started. The 3:00 tour was just getting started and I told my father we needed to check this out as it was the best part of the visit to the Orchid grower.

We just jumped into the group as they were starting right by the car. I bet we only missed 3 minutes of the tour, so we did not miss much.

When you enter the gate to the house you will see the parrot's in the cage, which are quite beautiful.

The tour is conducted by one of the employees who describes all of the orchids that are thru out the grounds.

It is hard to take a picture of eveything, but I hope you can get an idea of what we were looking at. The orchids are everywhere, and on all of the trees. I am talking about hundreds of plants, not just one or two. Every plant is a show in itself and they are all in different stages of blume. In a couple of weeks the show will be spectacular.

This plant that was hanging from the tree was the Vanilla bean. Did you know that that Vinilla is an Orchid. Vanilla (orchid) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia We eat Vanilla ice cream and it comes from an orchid. Makes me hungry!

The grounds were amazing, the pool seen here had a very large purple Vanda flower made out of mosaic tile at the bottom of the pool.

Just one of the Orchid Houses where the orchids are growing at RF Orchids. They must have thousands of orchids in various stages of growth. This grower is one of the biggest in South Florida as well as the country. This is a must see for every visitor.

I grow orchids as well and my yard does not even get close to this show. I have a couple of hundred orchids in pots and on the trees, I am trying to get there.

Robert is Here.....Fruit Stand

This weekend Dad and I went to Robert is Here, a fruit stand in South Florida. Travel south on the turnpike to Homestead and turn right at the light. While going towards the Everglades National Park you will pass Robert is Here on the corner. The best time to arrive is sometime mid-morning as later in the day you may not find a place to park.

Robert is here is a local fruit market that is an icon in South Florida, one of those must see, must do, bucket list type of events. I must admit, this was my first time going as we have passed it so many times.........this was the day! Dad was here so, Robert is Here, here we come!

Avaocado's were so colorful, these are the type that grow in our yard.

I must admit it was kind of neat. All the tropical fruit, the color, the local flavor was very special. I had a great time just looking and taking pictures. We did not purchase anything as we told each other we would be back to buy a milkshake made out of the local strawberry's. Unfortunatly we had a big day and missed coming back. Guess what, this is a reason to go back, and I am looking forward to that day!

Wow what a weekend ! It is great to live in South Florida, what a paradise.

Everglades National Park

You can see by the photo that we drove down to the Everglades National Park this weekend. The drive takes about 45 minutes and is straight south from Miami on the Turnpike. Go down to Homestead and take a right at the light, following the signs to the park. Really, it is an easy drive and I would recommend the trip to anyone who is in South Florida for a visit. The best time to go is during the dry season, which is the winter months.

The first stop is the visitors center which is a good place to stop to pick up a map of the area. The rangers are very friendly and will give you information concerning you trip for the day. Additionally, there is a brief walking history of the everglades and why they are so important to the ecosystem. The Everglades National Park was established in 1947.

After the visitors center you drive right into the park. We paid $10.00 which was good for the next week. The ranger just told us to show the ticket if we were returning another day. The first stop was the at the Royal Palm Hidden Lake Education Center and the Anhinga Trail.

The wild life is everywhere and some of the birds seem a bit tame. But do not be fooled, they will bite!

The great Blue Heron is the largest of the herons. They are standing so still, I am sure on the hunt for prey.

I had dad using one of my cameras during the day to take pictures. I believe this was his first time using a digital camera, he did a good job, but I think he took more photos than ended up on the disk. Not sure if he didn't push down the button all the way.

Gators are swimming and sunning everywhere. They are looking for the next meal. Just as long as it is not you.

The walk around the Anhinga Trail takes about 45 minutes to one hour. You are walking on a boardwalk above the everglades water and away from the gators. The birds were flying overhead and at times would come down to land on the water or the rail of the walkway.

I would recommend, sunscreen, light colored clothing, and a hat. The Saturday morning that we were there it was about 85 degrees. By the time we were done with the walk we were both hot and ready for water.

We jumped back into the car and drove further south heading towards the Pa-Hay-Okee Overlook which is about 13 miles from the visitors center. Along the way you pass thru Rock Reef Pass which is a large area covered in Dwarf Cypress Trees. Because it is winter and the dry season, dad asked if the trees were dead as they do not have leafs at this time of year.

The Pa-Hay-Okee overlook area gives you a panarama view of the everglades with the saw grass prairie and the cypress trees.

As you walk back to the parking lot looking to your right and left along the boardwak you will see the oolite limestone surface that makes up the floor of the everglades. The limestone erodes leaving large holes in the floor where grass and flowers spring up from.

Florida Keys

This past weekend we went down to the Florida Keys, which is about one hour and fifteen minutes from our house. Matt and Kelli were down for the weekend and we decided to go down to Islamorada for lunch.

We spent a couple of hours just hanging out and having lunch with dad.

Water sports are everywhere in the Keys. The weather was around 83 degrees and a wonderful day. Lunch was great and I would recommend it to everyone to drive down to World Wide Sportsman and have lunch at the Fish Market.

I will try to post something soon as we have been very busy. There is just some many things to do in South Florida. We are having a great time.

Fairchild Tropical Gardens

Saturday the 26th we went to the Fairchild Tropical Gardens to attend the 2nd annual Chocolate Festival. Wow, what a wonderful day, the weather was just tremendous, about 75 degrees.

We arrived at the Gardens around 9:15am and purchased a ticket for my father as my wife and I are currently members. The event was free for members and $15.00 for non-members.

The day was all about Chocolate.

The Cacao tree with it's seed pod that is attached to the trunk of the tree. We attended a lecture called Cacao 101 by Maricel Presilla, the author of The New Taste of Chocolate.

I have a new appreciation for the history of Chocolate, how the tree is grown, harvested in Latin America by small farmers and brought to market. So many different types of trees and the high cost of Cacao if it is from the right type of trees and processed properly.

The next time I eat a piece of chocolate I will wonder where it came from and the percent of Cacao it contains.

University of Miami Tennis Match

I have had a busy week at the University of Miami and have been unable to post much.

My father arrived from Scott City Kansas on Wednesday. He will be in Miami for all most a month, which will be great.

I have posted a couple of pictures of the UM Tennis Match on Friday afternoon that my wife and father attended.

This week end we are attending the Fairchild Gardens Chocolate Festival and then a Miami Heat Basketball Game. Sunday we will be attending the World Orchid Conference in Miami.

Beaux Art Festival - University of Miami

Today we went to the University of Miami campus for the Beaux Art Festival. The weather was 84 degree's and partly cloudy, actually, it was quite hot today. We had a great time walking around and enjoyed looking at the art as there were about 250 booths. We ran into a number of friends checking out the art as well.

This images is looking north from the School of Business. The palm trees provide a lot of shade to cool you down.

This is looking to the south of the business school. This image is a bit washed out as it is during mid-day sun, which is not the best time to take pictures.

Matheson Hammock

I have been looking thru the photos from the past weekend at Matheson Hammock and thought that I would post one additional image.

Last evening Lynette and I went to the University of Miami Gustman Hall for a concert by Ross Debardelaben. He has been working on his PH.D in Viola. The Concert started at 8:00 and went just past 10:00pm. The music was wonderful ! Ross is Great !!!

This weekend we are planning to go to the Beaux Art Festival on the campus of UM. Reports are that there should be 300 artists showing their art. I hope to be able to post a photo or two after this weekend.

Pinecrest Gardens Art Fair

Sunday afternoon I visited Pincrest Gardens Art Fair. I had a good time looking around at the art and taking pictures of the tropical gardens. The facility used to be called the Parrot Jungle, however, they moved over by the Miami Beach causeway.

The Iguanas are very large and are free to roam inside a secure area. This has become a problem in south Florida as you are starting to see them everywhere. Not just in a secured area.

Iguana is a genus of lizard native to tropical areas of Central and South America and the Caribbean first described by Austrian naturalist Josephus Nicolaus Laurenti in his book Specimen Medicum, Exhibens Synopsin Reptilium Emendatam cum Experimentis circa Venena in 1768. Matheson Hammock Day 2

I have not had a chance to work on the Panorama images but thought you might like to see one of the images that I did take yesterday.

This is a view of the lagoon as the sunrise is just taking place. It was very peaceful and about 75 degrees yesterday morning.

Matheson Hammock

This morning I woke up early and made my way over to Starbucks at about 5:45am. They were still not open, so I just waited in the car for about 15 minutes. Then I went on over to Matheson Hammock park in Coral Gables FL. I arrived prior to sunrise to take advantage of the best light. I feel that I secured a number of Images that I believe should make the website. Stay tuned.

I am going to try to put together a Panorama shot of the lagoon at Matheson Hammock, by stitching four images together in PhotoShop. I have never done it before, so this should be an adventure.

Additionally, at 2:00 today we went to the University of Miami Men's Basketball game against Georgia Tech. It was a very good game, UM won.
